Laptop Not Charging: Common Causes and What to Check
A laptop that won't charge — or only charges when you hold the cable at a certain angle — is a problem that tends to get worse over time if left unaddressed. Here's a look at the most common causes and what can be done about them.
The charger or cable has failed
Laptop chargers take a lot of physical wear — they get coiled, bent, and pulled at the connector end. The cable can develop internal breaks that are not visible from the outside, causing intermittent or no charging.
What to try: If you have access to a known-working charger for the same laptop model, try it. If the laptop charges with a different charger, the original charger is the problem and needs to be replaced. Always use a charger that matches the original voltage and wattage specifications — using an incorrect charger can damage the battery or charging circuit.
The charging port may be damaged or dirty
The charging port on a laptop takes mechanical stress every time the charger is plugged in and out. Over time, the port can become loose, bent internally, or the solder joints connecting it to the motherboard can crack. Lint and debris can also accumulate inside the port and prevent a good connection.
Signs of a port problem: the charger only works at a certain angle, the connection feels loose, or the charging indicator light flickers. Do not attempt to clean the port with metal objects — a soft brush or a short burst of compressed air is safer. Port replacement is a common repair on many laptop models, though the complexity varies depending on how the port is attached.
The battery may have reached the end of its life
Laptop batteries have a finite number of charge cycles — typically somewhere between 300 and 1,000 depending on the model and how it has been used. As a battery ages, it holds less charge, charges more slowly, and eventually may stop charging altogether or cause Windows to report that it is 'plugged in, not charging'.
You can check battery health in Windows by opening a Command Prompt and running: powercfg /batteryreport. This generates a report showing the battery's design capacity versus its current full charge capacity. A significant gap indicates the battery is degraded. Battery replacement is possible on many laptop models, though some newer designs make it more involved — a technician can advise on your specific machine.
A software or driver issue
Occasionally a Windows update or a driver issue can cause the battery to show as not charging even when the hardware is fine. The battery driver can sometimes be reset by uninstalling it through Device Manager (under Batteries) and restarting — Windows will reinstall it automatically.
This is worth trying before assuming a hardware fault, but if the problem persists after a driver reset, the issue is most likely physical.
A fault with the charging circuit on the motherboard
In some cases, the problem is not the charger, port, or battery — it is a component on the motherboard that manages charging. These faults are less common but do occur, particularly in laptops that have been exposed to liquid or power surges.
A motherboard-level charging fault requires professional diagnosis. A technician can test each component in sequence to isolate the cause before recommending a repair path.
When to get it looked at
A laptop that will not charge is not something to put off — once the battery runs flat, you lose access to everything on it until it is repaired.
RX-Tech-Solutions provides on-site laptop repairs throughout the Moreton Bay region — including North Lakes, Narangba, Burpengary, Redcliffe, Caboolture, and surrounding suburbs. We assess the fault, advise you on the repair options for your specific model, and provide a clear price before any work begins. A diagnostic or inspection fee may apply and will be discussed and agreed with you upfront — if we cannot fix the fault, you will not be charged for the repair itself.
