Should I Repair or Replace My Laptop?
When a laptop develops a serious fault, the question of whether to repair it or replace it isn't always straightforward. The right answer depends on several factors — and getting a proper diagnosis first is usually the best starting point.
Get a diagnosis first
The most important step before making any decision is to know exactly what is wrong. A vague sense that the laptop 'is not working properly' is not enough information to make a good call. A proper diagnosis will tell you what the fault is, whether it is repairable, and what the repair would involve.
Many faults that seem serious — a laptop that will not turn on, a screen that has gone black, a machine that runs extremely slowly — turn out to have straightforward causes. Equally, some faults that seem minor can indicate deeper problems. You need the diagnosis before you can weigh up the options.
Factors that may favour repairing
The fault is isolated and well-defined: a failed battery, a damaged charging port, a cracked screen, a failed hard drive, or a virus infection are all faults with clearer repair paths and more predictable outcomes.
The laptop is relatively recent: a machine that is three to five years old with good underlying hardware is often worth repairing, particularly if the fault is not related to the processor or motherboard.
The repair cost is reasonable relative to replacement: as a rough guide, if the repair cost is less than half the cost of a comparable replacement, repair is often the better financial decision — especially when you factor in the time and effort of setting up a new machine.
Your data is on it: if you have important files, a configured work environment, or software that would be difficult to reinstall, the value of the existing machine goes beyond its hardware.
Factors that may favour replacing
The laptop is old and has multiple problems: if a machine is seven or more years old and has accumulated several faults, the cost of repairs may approach or exceed the cost of a replacement — and you will still end up with an old machine.
The motherboard has failed: motherboard repairs or replacements are expensive and not always possible. On an older laptop, a motherboard fault often makes replacement the more practical option.
The hardware is no longer adequate for your needs: if the laptop was already struggling before the fault developed — too slow, not enough storage, unable to run current software — repairing it may just restore a machine that was already frustrating to use.
Parts are no longer available: for very old models, replacement parts may be difficult or impossible to source, which limits repair options regardless of cost.
What about your data?
Regardless of whether you repair or replace, your data matters. If you are replacing the laptop, make sure your files are backed up or transferred before the old machine is disposed of. If the laptop will not start, a technician may still be able to recover data from the hard drive even if the machine itself is beyond economic repair — though this is not always possible and depends on the condition of the drive.
