Common Signs Your Computer May Have Malware

Malware — which includes viruses, ransomware, spyware, adware, and other malicious software — doesn't always make itself obvious. Some infections are designed to run quietly in the background for as long as possible. Knowing the warning signs can help you catch a problem early.

The computer has become noticeably slower

A sudden or gradual drop in performance — particularly if nothing obvious has changed — is one of the more common signs of a malware infection. Many types of malware run background processes that consume processor and memory resources, leaving less available for your legitimate programs.

This is not always malware — hardware ageing and software bloat can also cause slowdowns — but if the slowdown is sudden and unexplained, it is worth investigating.

Unexpected pop-ups or browser behaviour

Adware and browser hijackers are designed to generate advertising revenue by displaying pop-ups, redirecting your searches to different websites, or changing your browser homepage and default search engine without your permission.

Signs to watch for: pop-up windows appearing outside of your browser, your browser opening to a different homepage than you set, search results being redirected through unfamiliar websites, and new toolbars or extensions appearing in your browser that you did not install.

Programs opening or closing on their own

If programs are launching, closing, or behaving in ways you did not initiate, this can be a sign of malware activity. Some malware is designed to open specific programs, disable security software, or prevent you from accessing certain websites or tools.

Your security software has been disabled

Some malware specifically targets antivirus and security software, disabling it to prevent detection and removal. If Windows Defender or your antivirus software has turned itself off and you cannot turn it back on, this is a significant warning sign that warrants professional attention.

Unusual network activity

Malware often communicates with external servers — to receive instructions, send stolen data, or download additional malicious software. If your internet connection seems unusually slow, your router lights are active when you are not doing anything online, or your data usage has increased unexpectedly, malware may be a contributing factor.

Files have been encrypted or you have received a ransom message

Ransomware is a particularly serious type of malware that encrypts your files and demands payment for the decryption key. If you see a message on your screen demanding payment, or if your files have been renamed with unfamiliar extensions and will not open, disconnect the computer from the internet immediately and seek professional help.

Do not pay the ransom without taking professional advice first. Payment does not guarantee recovery of your files, and it funds further criminal activity.

What to do if you suspect malware

Run a full scan with Windows Defender or a reputable security tool. If the scan finds something it cannot remove, or if the computer continues to behave strangely after a clean scan, professional removal is the safer option.
